Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #23

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Also, I discuss some other areas revolving around the business side of things.

Hard to believe this is my 23rd update or, thought of another way, 23rd week I've been working away on The Alchemancer: Book 2. But, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm just about there. Let's run through the usual.

The Hall of the Wood – 2nd Edition

Edits on this will be back by the end of the month. Not sure why I was thinking my editor was going to get everything back to me within a week of his having started editing. Anyway, this works out well cause I really would like the first draft of The Nullification Engine done before I switch over to reviewing edits on The Hall of the Wood.

Reminder: Anyone who signs up for my mailing list before the second edition comes out will get a free eBook copy. I use my mailing list for new novel notifications only, so no fear of sales pitches or other nonsense from me.

Blogging

This past week I blogged about:

Writing Progress – The Nullification Engine

I notice that as the week goes along and I get closer to my weekly word count goal of 5,000 words that I start to slow down. Once I'm over 5,000, my pace degenerates further and, in some cases, halts altogether. Take yesterday, for example. I was already over 6,000 for the week and just felt like taking a break before getting started again this morning. On one hand, the finish line is in sight. On the other, it's still far enough away that an all-nighter isn't going to finish this thing off. It goes back to slow and steady for me. It's worked for me so far.

So here's where I'm at and then I'm back to writing.

Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #20

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Also, I discuss some other areas revolving around the business side of things.

This is going to be the shortest writing update yet. Not much is going on, really, except for lots and lots of writing, and I'm out of here this weekend on a short vacation to celebrate my wife and I's 12th anniversary.

Writing Progress – The Nullification Engine

Very good week, even though it was a short one. Best weekly total yet at 7,601 words. Not much else to say. I'm about 3 1/2 chapters from finishing this first draft. At my current pace, I expect to be done within a month. Then the editing begins!

The only potential wrench I see in this plan is that I'll need to do some work on the second edition of The Hall of the Wood which I plan to release also in a month or so. It's good to have multiple projects in the cooker, though.

The Hall of the Wood – 2nd Edition

Work on the 2nd edition of The Hall of the Wood continues to move along. Yesterday, I revealed the new book cover.

My cover artist, Damon, used the cover to highlight how color can entice the reader to take the next step by picking up the book.

As a reminder, anyone who signs up for my mailing list before the second edition comes out will get a free eBook copy. I use my mailing list for new novel notifications only, so no fear of sales pitches or other nonsense from me.

Pretty good week of writing. I'm 5 chapters from finishing the first draft at this point. At around 6,000 words/chapter, that's realistically around 6 more weeks of work. I might be able to get it done in 5 weeks, but I've got a mini-vacation coming up so 6 is probably a better guess at this point.

Here's where I'm at.

With that, I'm going to see about getting my 1,000 words in for the day then I get to go outside and replace the throttle switch on my John Deere. Ah, real life.

Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #18

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Also, I discuss some other areas revolving around the business side of things.

I usually like to get these done on Saturday but decided to spent the day yesterday riding the mountain bike with the wife, so here we go with my usual update a day later than usual.

New Editor

I finalized discussions with a new editor. He's going to start with a manuscript refresh for The Hall of the Wood. That's a bit of news unto itself, so let's get into the next section.

The Hall of the Wood – 2nd Edition

You can read the details here, but a quick summary is that I've pulled The Hall of the Wood from online retail shelves while the book undergoes a new round of editing and polish. There's a new cover coming too, which I'll reveal as part of the 2nd edition launch. I expect to have it all ready to go around late May or perhaps early June at the latest.

One of the initial promotions for this re-launch is that for everyone signed up to my mailing list, I'll send you a free EPUB or Kindle/MOBI version of the new eBook. There's no obligation to review, so it's basically a free read with no strings attached.

The Hall of the Wood – new cover

As noted, I've got a new book cover for the 2nd edition of The Hall of the Wood. This past week I finalized that with my book cover illustrator, so it's all ready to go.

Blogging

This past week I blogged about:

I'm slowing down on blogging. I'll provide more details in a future post, but I'm finding I'd rather spend the time working on the current novel than writing up more posts. I suppose this is inevitable; there's only so much one can say on a day-to-day basis without getting burned out eventually.

Writing Progress – The Nullification Engine

If you go back and look at previous tables, you'll notice the numbers are all different. That's because my recordkeeping goes askew week-to-week based on the average number of words per chapter and the total number of chapters, both of which seem to have been changing a bit as I wind down this first draft. I started with 30 chapters. Now, I have an expected 22. Word count estimate was at 150,000 at one point. Now, it's at 132,330. I'm coming in with fewer chapters than The Five Elements, but each chapter is longer.

So, here's the current breakdown and I'm going to get back to writing. I might be able to wrap this first draft up in 5-6 weeks.

Maps

Maps are done. All five of them. Here are the reveals I've done so far:

The remaining two go along with the new book (progress below), so I'll keep those under wraps until the book launch.

New Editor

I had started a dialog with a potential new editor for my work and I'm happy to say we've entered into an agreement. I'm having him do a proofreading of The Hall of the Wood to start as I feel that title needs a bit more polish. Based on the edits he made to the sample I provided I think the book is going to come out of the process a whole lot stronger. Unfortunately, this particular person's services are in fairly high demand, so I won't get the final changes back for a couple of months. More waiting…

New Cover Designer

Since The Hall of the Wood is getting a new round of editing, I think it also needs a new cover. I got two potential proofs back from my new book cover designer this past week, showcased them over on kboards to get some feedback, and got some changes back to the designer. Now, more waiting as he makes those changes and gets them back to me.

Any week I exceed 5,000 words is a win in my book, so I'm happy with my progress, especially given that I continue to deal with other things like maps, covers, and editors. Such is the life of an independent author.

Here's the charts and I need to go mow the lawn (and then do some writing).
