Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #12

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Also, I discuss some other areas revolving around the business side of things.

Still waiting to hear back from my illustrator. I've been waiting for a while now and I'm starting to think the guy died. Seriously. It's been a couple of weeks and he hasn't responded with even a "still working on it". I'm going to send him another email today to see if he gets back to me. Kind of disconcerting and certainly unprofessional to not respond at all. He does some nice work and I'm actually not "in the hole" at all with him right now, so there's that, at least.

Blogging

This past week I blogged about:

Writing Progress

Another good week of progress on The Nullification Engine. Very nearly 50% done with the first draft. I should surpass that mark today. And I hit over 6300 words for the week which is my highest weekly total to date on this novel. Here are the numbers and I gotta get back to writing!

Some noteworthy tidbits about the posts above:

Author Interview: Andi O'Connor is the first ever author interview on this blog. I have many more coming, so stay tuned.

If you're curious about the various ways to get in touch, follow, like, etc. me, then look no further than my Connect with Me post.

And, last, in Races of Uhl: Eslar, I provide the most detailed look yet on the eslar, one of the races of the World of Uhl. Eslar characters appear in both of my novels and will continue to do so as they're one of my favorite peoples to write about.

Writing Progress

Best week yet. Here's the numbers and I gotta get started on another week of writing (I go Saturday am to Friday pm as my 'week' and consider Sunday a day off).

Maps

This past week I received the first draft of the complete world map for the World of Uhl. Uhl is the world I set my novels in. It looks really nice and can't wait to reveal it and make general use of it in my books and elsewhere. I need to go through it with a fine-toothed comb. Just from glancing at it I see it has some errors and omissions, but nothing too major.

Blogging

This past week I blogged about:

Writing Progress

Now, to the good stuff. This past week I wrote 5,658 words, bringing me up to a total of 62,161 or 40.1% complete. I've got the expected total word count at 155,000 (31 chapters * 20 pages/chapter * 250 words/page), but I'm fairly certain one of those chapters is going to get combined into the chapter I'm working on right now so the finishing line is going to get a little closer by default.

Here's the data and that's it from me.

Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #9

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Email Notification Sign-up

This bears repeating, I think. If you want to know when the next book in The Alchemancer series is ready, sign-up to receive an email notification. You won't receive emails for anything other than new novel announcements. Promise.

Maps

Maps, maps, maps. Lots going on with maps and, to tell you the truth, I'm getting a little tired of it. But, I'm almost there. To recap, I've done a reveal of the map for The Hall of the Wood and a reveal of the map for The Five Elements. New news in this area is that I've got some final changes back to my illustrator on the map for The Nullification Engine and, even better, the first sketch to him for the World of Uhl map. One of the really nice things about having a real map done up is that I'm finding myself referring to the places in my current writing a lot more. Having it be concrete makes the difference, I think. Now, characters are from specific places or have visited certain locales or might refer to some place in some manner. I have to say I think the money I've spent on having these maps drawn up has been worth it.

Now, are they impacting sales? I'd have to say 'no'. The usual obscurity problem remains, though I did have someone from Amazon contact me after he saw the maps on my site and in my eBooks. That's a good story for another post.

New Characters

While most of the primary roles are filled at this point, I'm continuing to add supporting characters or even some who might only have their names mentioned and nothing more. The intention with those latter ones is that they might play a role in the next book.

This past week I added a total of 4 new supporting characters. You see, in this next book I revisit the Griffin. Yep, the airship that Shanna blasted her way free from towards the end of The Five Elements is back and this time it's getting the full treatment. You'll get to meet the crotchety old captain, the responsible and daring first mate, the chief engineer, and others. Oh, and remember the characters who were taken onboard as prisoner? The ones from Norwynne? They're back as well as converted members of the crew.

Anyway, here's the new faces to look for and their roles:

  • Yasir, chief engineer
  • Briggs, quartermaster
  • Farny, airman
  • Miles, airman

Weekly Writing Progress & Other Business #8

I'm writing the next book in The Alchemancer series. It's called The Nullification Engine and should be out soon. As a way to keep readers updated on my progress and also so I can gauge the same, each week I take a look at my current writing progress and report it here. Also, I discuss some other areas revolving around the business side of things.

    Email Notification Sign-up

I'll start with a quick note that I started an email notification list for readers to sign-up for if they want to receive an email when the next book in The Alchemancer series, The Nullification Engine, is out. Go here to sign-up. You won't receive emails for anything other than new novel announcements. Promise.

    Maps

Still working away on maps. I have a few changes to submit for the map to go along with The Nullification Engine and I spent a lot of time on the world map. In fact, I have a rough draft done of the latter at this point, so I just need to redo it a bit more neatly and send it off to my illustrator so he can get started.

I expect map work to drop off sometime soon. The final and biggest one is the city map of Brighton, where most of the The Nullification Engine takes place.

You can view all of my maps thus far on the World of Uhl Maps page.

    New Characters

I needed someone to assume duties of the army of one of Brighton's neighbors, so I give you Field Marshall Durant.

I don't really want to give a lot of details on characters yet as the book is still being written and things could change. At this point he's really just a name, anyway. He'll likely have a larger role in the next book.

You can view all of the characters from my novels at the World of Uhl People page.

I'm still blogging every day. This past week I blogged about:

    Reviews/Ratings

Just a single rating (no review) this past week for The Five Elements over on Goodreads. It's 4 stars, which you'll never see me complaining about.

    Writing Progress

Not a great week for writing. Monday morning I sat down at my desk at my usual 6 am to discover that this site was down. After several hours later on the phone with the customer service department of my web hosting company, we finally figured out what they'd done and got everything back up. Then, as the week progressed, the day job got busier and busier. I soldiered on, though, and did the best I could.

I've also "caught up" at this point, meaning I've absorbed all of the previously written material I wrote so everything from here on out is breaking new ground.

Here's where I'm at with The Nullification Engine. I'm really shooting for 5,000 words per week, so I fell a bit short this time.
