Barnabus the Terrible

Barnabus’s early life was a tempestuous storm marked by abandonment and hardship. Born in a small, weather-beaten cottage on the outskirts of a bustling village, he grew up under the shadow of a father whose love had been drowned in the depths of alcohol. Each night, as the sun dipped below the horizon, the soothing sounds of the village gave way to the slurred curses and violent outbursts of his father, a drunkard whose rage knew no bounds. By the age of fifteen, Barnabus could endure no longer. One fateful evening, after a vicious brawl, his father threw Barnabus out of the house, a bag of rags slung over his shoulder and little else to his name.

Alone and desperate, Barnabus found refuge among the shadows of the city’s mercenary encampment, drawn to the rough camaraderie that flourished among the battle-hardened warriors. The mercenary company, known as the Iron Fist Brigade, welcomed him, albeit reluctantly. At first, the mercenaries relegated Barnabus to the role of a gopher, assigning him menial tasks like carrying heavy supplies, cleaning weapons, and fetching ale for the seasoned fighters. Though grueling and unglamorous, he embraced each task, learning the lay of their camp and absorbing the stories of skirmishes and valor that hung in the air like smoke.

As the months turned into years, Barnabus’s tenacity shone through. His hard work and loyalty earned him a place among the fighters, transforming him from a scrawny boy into a formidable warrior. He trained relentlessly, honing his swordplay, strategy, and survival skills. In the lawless Freelands, where strength of arms dictated one’s fate, Barnabus learned to wield a blade with the fury of a cornered beast. His natural talent for combat and his fierce determination gave him victories in skirmishes that quickly garnered him a reputation.

As the realization set in, Galen’s fury rose. Drawing his broadsword, he took an intentional step toward Jakinda, but stopped when Barnabus stepped between them.

“Now, Galen,” the arena master said, “the rules are the rules, and you damn well know what they are. First blood goes to the eslar. You’re finished, Galen. Leave.”

Galen fumed, unable to speak but also not leaving.

“I said, leave,” Barnabus said, clenching his staff. He seemed to grow taller, his words spoken with a veiled threat that was hard to ignore. Barnabus the Terrible, indeed, Jakinda thought, breathing a sigh of relief when Galen stalked from the ring.
