At the age of twenty, Kem committed himself to the holy order dedicated to preserving the knowledge of the Old Gods. Believing that understanding the past is essential for crafting a better future, he devoted his life to studying ancient texts and rituals, working tirelessly to maintain the archives and teach others about their significance. “I know I am not well equipped for these situations, but I’m responsible. I should have pushed harder when they said the threat was over. I need to go with you to make sure Ashunde is stopped once and for all.”

I thought about arguing some more, but the fire in his eyes convinced me otherwise. Kem was not a man of action, but even the meek will rise up and fight if pushed hard enough. Kem had as much of a stake in this as I did. So far be it from me to keep him out of it.

“All right,” I said. “But you know this may get messy, so make sure before we leave the temple that you’re prepared to do what’s necessary. Understand?”

“Fully,” he said without hesitation, though I had my doubts.
