Kem grew up in the bustling city of Alchester, where the remnants of the Old Gods still whisper through the cobbled streets and ancient ruins. From an early age, he exhibited a profound curiosity for the stories and teachings of these deities, often seeking solace in the musty tomes of the city’s archives, where he pored over records of their legends and customs. Although not affluent, his family instilled strong ethical values and a sense of community in him, shaping his desire to help those around him. When tragedy struck during his teenage years in the form of a devastating fire that ravaged a local neighborhood, Kem volunteered, providing comfort and aid to those affected, which ignited a lifelong passion for service.
At the age of twenty, Kem committed himself to the holy order dedicated to preserving the knowledge of the Old Gods. Believing that understanding the past is essential for crafting a better future, he devoted his life to studying ancient texts and rituals, working tirelessly to maintain the archives and teach others about their significance. Over the years, he became a respected figure in the order and across the city’s communities, whose people came to know him for his unwavering compassion and wisdom.
“I know I am not well equipped for these situations, but I’m responsible. I should have pushed harder when they said the threat was over. I need to go with you to make sure Ashunde is stopped once and for all.”
I thought about arguing some more, but the fire in his eyes convinced me otherwise. Kem was not a man of action, but even the meek will rise up and fight if pushed hard enough. Kem had as much of a stake in this as I did. So far be it from me to keep him out of it.
“All right,” I said. “But you know this may get messy, so make sure before we leave the temple that you’re prepared to do what’s necessary. Understand?”
“Fully,” he said without hesitation, though I had my doubts.
- THE ASSASSIN’S CUNNING
