Malcolm Roberts grew up in the shadow of greatness, watching his older brother Nicholas inherit their father's title as Earl of Kettering while he received the lesser Barony of Agratis. Though both siblings enjoyed the privileges of the nobility, Malcolm never forgot the twist of fate that made him second-born, relegating him to a lesser position despite his capabilities.
The brothers' early years proved different. Where Nicholas excelled in diplomatic matters and governance, Malcolm showed a keen mind for strategy and ambition. Their father recognized these traits, often praising Nicholas's steady hand while cautioning Malcolm about his aggressive approach to problems. These subtle comparisons fed a growing resentment in Malcolm's heart.
Upon assuming control of Agratis, Malcolm threw himself into proving his worth. Under his guidance, the barony's lumber operations expanded significantly while new mining ventures brought unprecedented wealth to the region. He modernized operations, improved efficiency, and showed an uncanny ability to maximize profit from every resource. His success earned respect from his people and acknowledgment from other nobles.
Sunlight filtering in from windows perched high up lit the room, along with lazily smoking braziers at each side of a carpeted aisle that led to a raised dais where Lord Malcolm sat waiting. The lord’s grave and unblinking eyes seemed far too stern for Evan’s liking, especially as they watched his approach like a hawk hunting a mouse, never deviating until Evan stood right before him. Even then, Evan saw the man studying him, looking him up and down, examining his armor, weapons, and especially his face. Lord Malcolm’s stare fixed for far too long on his face as if he saw something he recognized. Only concerned before, for the first time since their arrival, Evan began to truly worry.
Patrollers bowed to no one except the king, but Evan was willing to go so far as to offer a nod to help smooth over the unexpected nature of his arrival. “My lord, I am Evan—”
“My page already told me your name,” Lord Malcolm growled.

Marriage brought him additional influence through connections to other noble houses, though he viewed his wife more as a political asset than a partner. Their union produced no children, a fact that relieved Malcolm. He knew any offspring might complicate his future plans for advancement.
The birth of his nephew, Phillip, changed everything. Watching the child grow into the presumptive heir of Kettering stirred something dark within Malcolm. His ambitions, already substantial, crystallized into a singular focus. The earldom, he believed, should belong to someone who could maximize its potential. Someone like himself.
Malcolm cultivated relationships throughout Kettering, building a network of loyal supporters by manipulating resources and information. He studied the intricacies of power, learning which nobles had a price, which would succumb to pressure, and which might support a change in succession under the right circumstances.
His reputation for competence grew alongside his influence. Where other nobles might hesitate, Malcolm acted decisively. When others saw obstacles, he recognized opportunities. This determination earned him admirers among those who valued strength and results above all else. Even those who distrusted his methods could not deny his effectiveness.
The facade of the dutiful brother never slipped in public. Malcolm maintained cordial relations with Nicholas, offering counsel when asked and support when needed. Yet behind this mask of fraternal loyalty, he meticulously documented every misstep and weakness in his brother's rule, filing away information that might prove useful.
From his seat at Rockhaven, Malcolm built his power base. The castle became known for its efficiency and martial readiness, reflecting its lord's personality. He transformed the guard into a well-trained fighting force, ostensibly for protection.
Years of careful planning and positioning have hardened Malcolm's resolve. He views the succession of his nephew Phillip not as an immutable fact but as a challenge to overcome. His dedication to claiming the earldom has become an obsession, driving every decision and relationship.
Malcolm's persistence manifests in his daily routine, rising before dawn to manage affairs, train with weapons, and scheme. He maintains a rigorous schedule, expecting the same dedication from those who serve him. This discipline has made Agratis one of the most efficient and prosperous baronies in the region, though few understand the true purpose behind such achievements.
The people of Agratis see a strong, capable leader who has brought prosperity to their lands. They do not glimpse the ambition that burns within him nor recognize that their baron views their success merely as a stepping stone toward greater power. Malcolm Roberts patiently builds his influence, knowing that opportunity favors the prepared, and he intends to be very prepared indeed when his moment arrives.
