Ruby Crane was born into a world of innovation and intellectual fervor in the vibrant city of Alchester. As the daughter of Professor Remy Crane, a respected scientist at the Society for the Progression of Science and Technology, Ruby grew up surrounded by the hum of machinery, the scent of chemicals, and the thrill of discovery. Ruby remembers afternoons spent in her father’s laboratory, where she would watch him conduct experiments, explain complex theories, and share in his passion for science. From a young age, Ruby exhibited an insatiable curiosity and a keen mind, mirroring her father’s brilliance.
However, Ruby’s childhood was not without its challenges. When she was just a child, tragedy struck with the sudden passing of her mother, a brilliant scientist in her own right. This loss cast a long shadow over Ruby’s early years, leaving her to navigate the complexities of grief alongside her burgeoning passion for science. Despite the heartache, Remy was determined to honor his late wife’s legacy by nurturing Ruby’s innate talents. He encouraged her to explore her interests and immerse herself in the scientific pursuits that had once captivated her mother. The laboratory became a place of learning and a sanctuary where Ruby found solace in the wonders of the natural world.
As she grew, Ruby developed a particular fascination with inventing and experimentation. She often spent hours tinkering with various gadgets, eager to create something new and remarkable. Her innovative spirit caught the attention of her father and others within the Society, as she contributed to several projects and theoretical breakthroughs alongside him. Ruby’s keen analytical mind and creativity enabled her to approach problems from unique angles, often leading to solutions that surprised even seasoned scientists.
“Who . . . ?” a voice from inside said. “Oh, it’s you, Samuel.” The door opened, revealing a smallish, mousey woman with short hair, oversized glasses, and a lackluster lab coat. She took one look at me and Liz and our black leather and, far from cowering in fear, opened her mouth in an expression of glee. “Does this mean you have it?”
“We do, Ruby,” Samuel said. “May we come in?”
Once inside, Ruby closed the door and introduced herself. “My name is Dr. Ruby Crane. Professor Remy Crane is my father. Let me show you to him.”
The woman was no more than twenty, slightly overweight, but with a furious pace we struggled to keep up with as she led us through a room full of the same junk from outside, though these pieces appeared in good working order.
- THE ASSASSIN’S CUNNING
Throughout her academic journey, Ruby faced the weight of expectations that accompanied being Remy Crane’s daughter, and she often felt compelled to prove herself outside of her father’s shadow. Yet, rather than succumbing to pressure, she embraced it, using her drive to push the boundaries of her own capabilities. Ruby participated in many competitions and showcases, where her inventions gained recognition and admiration. Her reputation as a gifted young scientist blossomed, gradually establishing her identity within the scientific community.
Despite her achievements, Ruby remained grounded and deeply connected to her father. Their bond was a source of strength and inspiration in her life. Together, they delved into the mysteries of science while also honoring the memory of her mother, often incorporating her teachings and ideals into their work. Remy taught Ruby the intricacies of science and the importance of ethical responsibility in their discoveries. These lessons shaped her worldview and instilled a sense of purpose that transcended personal ambition.
Though Ruby’s path has been marked by trials and triumphs, she remains undeterred in her quest for knowledge. With her father’s unwavering support and her own innate talents, Ruby is poised to make a significant impact in the world of science, driven by a fierce desire to honor her mother’s legacy while forging her own unique identity in the annals of Alchester’s scientific community.
