Sertenium

SERTENIUM

Overview

The man called Sertenium was not born with that name. His true name remains unknown, lost to the shadows of a past he has no interest in sharing. The name “Sertenium” came later, chosen for its mysterious resonance in Western tongues—a deliberate invention, like so much else about the man.

His early years passed in rigorous study within hidden mountain temples beyond the Miradathia Sea, where ancient masters taught the arts of sorcery and subterfuge. These masters believed true power lay not in grand displays of magic but in the subtle manipulation of events. Young Sertenium proved an exceptional student, mastering spells of concealment and influence while developing an innate understanding of human nature that would serve him as well as any enchantment.

Tragedy struck when rival sorcerers destroyed his order, forcing Sertenium to flee westward. The journey across the Miradathia Sea, through Panthora, and eventually to the Four Fiefdoms transformed him, stripping away any remaining idealism and replacing it with cold pragmatism. He learned to survive by trading secrets and selling his services to those who could afford them, building a reputation in port cities as a man who could make problems disappear.

It was during this westward passage that Sertenium first crossed paths with agents of the Sorcerer’s League. The League, always alert for practitioners of genuine talent operating outside their ranks, recognized in the displaced mystic a rare combination of skill and ruthlessness. Whether Sertenium was formally inducted into their number or merely entered into an arrangement of mutual convenience remains unclear—an ambiguity both parties seem content to maintain. What is certain is that when he arrived in the Four Fiefdoms, he did not arrive alone. The League’s network of contacts smoothed his path and opened doors that would have remained closed to an unknown foreign sorcerer. In return, Sertenium became another set of eyes and hands in a region the League had long sought to influence from the inside.

His wanderings eventually brought him to Rockhaven, where Lord Malcolm Roberts recognized the value of such a skilled practitioner of magic and espionage. Their partnership proved natural, as both men understood the power of information and the importance of patience in achieving one’s goals. Under Lord Malcolm’s patronage, Sertenium established an intricate network of informants throughout Kettering, his magical abilities enhancing a natural talent for gathering intelligence and allowing him to learn secrets others believed hidden.

Appearance

Sertenium is a sliver of a man—thin, narrow, and eerily quiet in his movements. A dark mustache frames lips that seem perpetually poised at the edge of a wicked grin, as though he has just heard something he should not have and is deciding what to do with it. He favors exquisite silk robes, so finely made they muffle his every step and rustle, lending him a disconcerting ability to arrive at one’s elbow without warning. His hands, when not folded or steepled before him, remain perfectly still—the only part of him that does not seem to be in constant, watchful motion. He does not walk into a room so much as slide into it, a presence felt a half second before it is seen.

Abilities & Sorcery

Sertenium’s training among the eastern mystics grounded him in the philosophy that true sorcerous power operates unseen. His talents center on the subtle arts: spells of concealment that allow him to vanish from sight or pass unnoticed through guarded spaces, enchantments of influence that bend the will of the weak-minded, and rituals of information gathering that make secret-keeping a hazardous occupation for anyone within his reach. He is capable of binding spells—simple, efficient restraints that even a trained soldier cannot break free from—and has demonstrated the ability to appear and disappear at will, a skill he wields as much for theatrical effect as for tactical advantage.

While capable of more dramatic displays of sorcery, Sertenium rarely indulges in them. He prefers methods that leave no trace of his involvement, an approach that has served both him and his patrons well by preserving what more straightforward practitioners would call plausible deniability. Whatever deeper knowledge or darker techniques he may have acquired through his association with the Sorcerer’s League, he keeps well hidden, revealing only as much of his capabilities as any given moment requires—and never a sliver more.

Personality & Demeanor

Sertenium cultivates fear the way other men cultivate gardens—patiently, deliberately, and with evident satisfaction in the results. He particularly enjoys letting people glimpse him in places they believe are secure, reinforcing the belief that nowhere remains truly private. His mere presence at a gathering silences conversations and causes discomfort among those with secrets to hide. The sorcerer’s quarters in Rockhaven have become a place of whispered rumor, where strange lights flicker in the windows late at night and exotic scents waft from his chambers. He maintains a collection of mysterious artifacts and books in languages few can read, adding to an aura of otherworldly menace he has constructed with great care.

Beneath the theatre lies a mind of genuine cunning. Sertenium is patient, calculating, and utterly unsentimental. He treats loyalty as a transaction, not a virtue, and sees no contradiction in serving a patron faithfully while pursuing an agenda entirely his own. He is at his most dangerous when he appears most helpful, and those who mistake his deference for servility tend not to make the mistake twice.

Notable Relationships

Sertenium’s most visible alliance is with Lord Malcolm Roberts, the baron of Agratis. His loyalty to Malcolm stems not from feudal obligation but from a calculated assessment of mutual benefit. In Malcolm, Sertenium recognizes a patron whose ambitions align with his own desire for power and influence—an arrangement that provides him with protection and resources while allowing him to exercise his talents with little inhibition. None save perhaps Malcolm himself knows the full extent of the sorcerer’s capabilities or his true motives, and Sertenium intends to keep it that way.

His ties to the Sorcerer’s League represent a more shadowed relationship. The League values Sertenium for the access his position in Rockhaven affords—a sorcerer embedded in a baron’s household is precisely the sort of agent their doctrine of quiet infiltration demands. Sertenium, for his part, values the League’s network and resources without surrendering his independence to their hierarchy. The arrangement suits both sides, though neither would be foolish enough to call it trust.

Role & Affiliations

Sertenium serves as steward and advisor to Lord Malcolm Roberts in Rockhaven, a position that grants him authority over the baron’s household and daily access to the inner workings of Agratis’ seat of power. Lord Malcolm has indicated that once he assumes leadership of the earldom, Sertenium will be elevated to lord chamberlain—a promotion that would place the sorcerer at the center of political life across all of Kettering. Beyond his official station, Sertenium operates an intricate network of informants throughout the region, blending sorcery and espionage into an intelligence apparatus that answers to Malcolm alone—or so Malcolm believes.
