Evelyn Mullin grew up amidst the gritty streets of Alchester, where the harsh realities of life instilled in her a grumpy disposition and a sharp tongue. Coming from a family of modest means, Evelyn learned the art of survival at a young age, grappling with the burdens of scarcity and responsibility when her father fell ill. Determined to support her family, she developed an instinct for negotiation and a keen eye for value, often haggling fiercely to secure the best prices and make ends meet.
“Boys,” Evelyn growled, “toss this clown out on his arse, will you? The oinker, too.”
I held up my hands. “Relax, Evelyn. We aren’t here to cause trouble. We’re only looking for a bit of information.”
“Oh, is that all? Well, here’s some information for you: if you don’t get your arses out of my store now, my boys will throw you out . . . one piece at a time!”
At her prompting, each man brandished a long knife. They grinned in unison.
“No need for that,” I said, tossing a single silver denar onto the counter so that it rolled between the bars. There’s more than one way to charm a lady. “A moment of your time is all we need, then we’ll leave.”
- THE ASSASSIN’S BLADE
Once she opened Mullin’s Pawn Shop, her reputation quickly solidified as a no-nonsense pawnbroker who offered fair prices but never hesitated to bark at anyone who dared waste her time. Known for her gruff demeanor, she often greeted customers with a scowl while a plume of cigarette smoke lingered around her like a second skin, a habit that had become as much a part of her identity as her shrewd business acumen. Although her shop primarily deals with legal goods, Evelyn is far from averse to making a quick profit from the underbelly of Alchester, discreetly facilitating the trade of stolen items or shady goods, all while grumbling about the state of the world and people in it.
