I noticed I received two new reviews for one of my books over the past day, which is great. Reviews come few and far between for most authors, so any review is a good review and always welcome. It got me thinking about something most authors are too polite to bring up: just how much book reviews actually matter.
If you've ever left a review or rating on Amazon, Goodreads, or any retailer site, you've done more for an author than you probably realize. Here's why.
They build buyer confidence. Most readers won't take a chance on an unfamiliar author without social proof. A book with fifty honest reviews—even a mix of ratings—looks far more trustworthy than one sitting at three reviews, no matter how glowing those three are. Reviews tell potential readers that real people read the book and had something to say about it.
They unlock promotional opportunities. Sites like BookBub—one of the most powerful book promotion platforms out there—have minimum review thresholds before they'll even consider featuring an author. Without enough reviews, certain paid promotions and visibility tools are simply off the table. For indie authors especially, those doors can make or break a book's reach.
They influence retailer algorithms. Amazon's recommendation engine pays attention to review activity. Books with more reviews and ratings get surfaced more often in "also bought" and "you might like" suggestions. It's a visibility cycle—reviews lead to visibility, visibility leads to more readers, and more readers lead to more reviews.
They help me grow as a writer. This one's personal. An informative review—one that goes beyond "I liked it" or "not for me"—lets me know what I'm doing right and where I'm falling short. When a reader says the pacing in the middle dragged, or that a particular character's arc felt rushed, that's feedback I carry into the next book. When someone says the worldbuilding pulled them in, or a plot twist caught them off guard, that tells me I'm landing the things I'm aiming for.
You don't need to write an essay. Even a sentence or two with a star rating makes a difference. And it doesn't have to be five stars to be valuable—honest reviews carry more weight than perfect scores.
If you've read one of my books and have a moment, I'd be grateful if you'd consider leaving a review or rating on whatever platform you use—Amazon, Goodreads, Apple Books, wherever you picked it up. It doesn't have to be long or detailed. A quick star rating and a line or two about what you thought goes a long way. Every single one helps.
