Jerrick Bur

Jerrick Bur was born in the lands beyond Twin Boulders Crossing, on the far side of the Simmaron Forest, into a family marked by tragedy. His birth cost his mother her life during childbirth, leaving him to be raised by his father until the age of six. His father, consumed by guilt over his wife's death, eventually revealed his belief that he was somehow responsible for the tragedy before abandoning young Jerrick. The boy was then raised by foster parents in Cerlin, and this early abandonment left lasting emotional scars that would shape Jerrick's cautious approach to forming deep connections throughout his life.

As a young man of about eighteen, Jerrick came to the Simmaron Forest to train with the King's Patrollers. His early days were marked by inexperience despite his overconfidence—he knew very little about surviving in the woods though he thought he did. During this period, he met Old Man Jasper, a seasoned trapper who would become a lifelong friend and mentor. Jasper first encountered the struggling trainee on a cold, miserable night when Jerrick was lost in the forest. Taking pity on the shivering youth, Jasper invited him to his camp and began teaching him humility and practical woodcraft. Their relationship was solidified during a humorous incident where Jerrick tried to show Jasper a "better way" to hunt wild boar, only to end up being chased by the beast and requiring Jasper's intervention to survive.

Through rigorous training, Jerrick mastered combat skills, woodcraft, tracking, and forest protection. He served initially in squad-based operations before advancing to squad leader, where his natural leadership abilities and pragmatic approach earned him respect. His leadership style was marked by a reluctance to cause unnecessary bloodshed—he believed patrollers were protectors, not butchers. Later, he transitioned to solitary rover duties, which suited his somewhat solitary nature. As a rover, he was assigned the demanding Regdale Keep patrol, a route running from the Hall west over the Ugull Mountains, through Rell, and on to Regdale Keep south of Thesia.

It was during one of these patrol routes, approximately six years before his return to the Simmaron, that Jerrick met Kendra. After being trapped in a cave for a week during a severe mountain storm, he emerged disheveled and desperate, seeking shelter at the first cottage he saw. Kendra, thinking he was one of the bandits recently reported in the area, threw a basket of laundry at his face and fled. Her father Rusar emerged with a pitchfork, ready to defend his property. Once explanations were made and apologies given, the family offered hospitality, which Jerrick repaid by helping with farm work. Captivated by Kendra's beauty and spirit—he described her as "like a woodland sylph" and "the prettiest thing he ever had seen"—Jerrick found excuses to return during subsequent patrols. Over two years, they developed a deep relationship and married.

For love of Kendra, Jerrick left his patroller career and settled in Rell as a farmer. For a time, they were genuinely happy and content. While Jerrick was satisfied without children, Kendra desired "a real family," and eventually became pregnant with a daughter they planned to name Anna. The morning Kendra went into labor, she was enjoying her favorite ritual of watching the sunrise from their porch with her morning tea. When her water broke, something immediately felt wrong. Both Anna and Kendra died during the traumatic birth. Anna was stillborn, and Kendra died shortly after from complications. Jerrick was helpless to save either, forced to watch his wife's life drain away while holding her hand.

For two years following their deaths, Jerrick carried crushing guilt, believing he had somehow caused the deaths through his own nature or actions. He even blamed his unborn daughter for Kendra's death, a self-torment that consumed him. The dog Ash, originally Kendra's companion, became his sole remaining connection to his former happiness. Seeking answers and some form of redemption, Jerrick eventually left Rell and returned to the Simmaron Forest, hoping to reconnect with old friends and find purpose again.

Jerrick is naturally solitary, pragmatic, and reluctant to cause unnecessary death, yet possesses strong leadership skills despite often doubting himself. His experiences with loss have made him cautious about forming deep emotional connections, though he remains capable of great loyalty and friendship. As a seasoned patroller, he's an expert tracker, woodsman, archer, and swordsman with extensive knowledge of the Simmaron Forest and excellent tactical instincts. His years of rover duty made him particularly skilled at solitary survival and long-range reconnaissance.

Jerrick has recently been offered the position of Squadron Captain by Commander Thomas Drake. He continues to search for answers about his father's past and the circumstances surrounding his family's tragedies. His planned journey to Cerlin, where his foster parents still live, represents his hope of finding clues about his father's whereabouts and understanding the events that shaped his troubled family history.
